|
|
I started this trip by visiting the Watheroo nat park north of Moora. My maps indicated there was a track that went passed a spring and water hole...........
The track started off promising but after a while pettered away to nothing
further investigation showed the park to be very sandy with low often burnt scrub. i tried a few other roads/tracks but my maps wernt up to date even with ozi explorer running i was confounded by barrier fences, unmarked farms and disapearing tracks.
not wanting to get bogged or trapped in the fading light i made camp
the next day it was off to Rothsey with a quick stop at Jingemia cave near Watheroo
Carnamah was the start of the trip
East tom Perenjori and onto the Rothsay road. First stop was the salmons campground.
Not needing to camp i pushed on and the next stop was the Rothsay Cemetary
Not far away was the mining centre Rothsay which has been mined a few times over the years.
Old mine managers house
open cut mine with portal at the bottom
i amused my self by getting to the bottom and trying to figure out what they were mining - thin flat lying quartz veins by the looks. I was also fascinated at the Gum trees growing at the bottom with no top soil in a very depleted environment .
Still coming from Kalgoorlie poking about old mining centres was a bit of old hat although there is plenty to see which others took advantage of
So it was on to the old Rothsay road which had the best flowers of the trip
Next stop was the forrest lookout in the Damperwah hills.
There is a walk trail to the top which gives you expansive views of the ancient region
I camped here overnight with bins and dunnys provided.
In the morning i continued on.
Its hard to actually be able to photograph the sheer kaladiscope of colour in the bush. Every bush is flowering and the flowers on the ground produce carpts of different colours. Every few hundred metrs is another page
Passed old sandlewood cutters hut
And then on to the old rabbit proof fence where i stopped at a camel soak which would have been used as a watering point for fence boundary riders
this guy just added to the colour
and back to perth just stopping at a lookout to check out a lake and breakaways

A day trip out of Perth?
Struth I never heard of most of those places!
What were they mining, do you know?
Gotta be real carefull bout these national parks - if old tracks have not been used, and have grown back over - then some overzealouse DEC/ CALM officer is likely to charge you with killing native flora if you drive over rehabilitated land / new growth - they are a funny bunch like that!
All the same neat photos!
Still curious what they were mining, quarts usually means Gold - well quartz & ironstone together does......so one wonders what they were digging!
Cheers _________________ href="http://z7.invisionfree.com/Fly_West" target="_blank"></a></a> |

i just assumed gold but a google would confirm it.
As for the track it started off ok but turned to crap with a turn around not long after it came to what i assume was some kind of monetering bore.
ive actually never come accross a ranger out bush anyway.
The nat park was possibly because it bounds a vegetation change area, rather than its unique countryside. Another example of a park like that in Goongarrie. these parks tend to have little in the way of maintined access and no facilitys and no attractions in contrast to places like karranjini etc.
perfect for finding some little known spot................... but not this time _________________

Nice report. It's high on our list to get over to WA for the wildflower season one year. _________________ I drink; therefore I am. |
